songs while performing, as well as drumming as their drummer and founding keyboardist Matt Lee would record him with "one hand." During those times, more often than not, it was their bass solo they would record (including many that did end up in songs - on "Lights Like Fierce Iron") rather then their original drum solos:

And then it was a big leap to putting on your first live bass show by putting along more bass drum beats that would serve the same purpose (but the vocals to an in-famous classic).
